Custom Roman Shades for Windows

What are roman shades?

Roman shades are flat panels of fabric that fold up into horizontal pleats when raised.

When lowered, they lie flat against the window like a tailored panel. They combine the softness of curtains with the neat, compact look of a shade. That makes them a good fit for kitchens, bedrooms and any window where full curtains feel too heavy.

Roman shade styles: flat, hobbled and relaxed

The fold style sets the whole look of your roman window shades. We make three.

StyleHow it looksBest for
FlatClean, crisp folds that stack when raised; flat when loweredModern rooms, bold patterns, small windows
HobbledSoft, cascading folds visible even when loweredTraditional rooms, solid fabrics, a fuller look
RelaxedA gentle curve at the bottom edgeCasual, cottage and farmhouse rooms

Cordless and motorized roman shades

You can choose how your shades lift. Cordless roman shades are the most popular for safety and a tidy look. Motorized roman shades open with a remote, app or voice assistant.

Cordless: raise or lower the shade by the bottom rail. No dangling cords, so it’s the safer choice with children and pets.

Motorized: ideal for tall, wide or hard-to-reach windows. Set schedules for morning light and evening privacy.

Light-filtering or blackout roman shades

The lining controls how much light comes through. Light-filtering roman shades soften daylight and give daytime privacy. Blackout lining blocks most outside light for bedrooms and nurseries. Lining also protects the face fabric from sun fading and helps the folds hold their shape. See lining options.

Inside mount or outside mount?

An inside mount fits within the window frame for a clean, built-in look. It needs about 2 inches of frame depth. An outside mount sits above and around the frame, which covers more glass and blocks more light at the edges. It also makes the window look larger. Our roman shade measuring guide explains both.

Where roman shades work best

Kitchens: stay clear of the counter and sink, unlike long curtains.

Bedrooms: pair blackout roman shades with side drapery for a layered look.

Bay windows: one shade per pane keeps each section tidy (see bay window ideas).

Bathrooms and small windows: a neat fabric finish without bulk.

Custom roman shades FAQ

How do roman shades work?

Roman shades have rings or a lift system sewn into the back. When you raise the shade, the fabric folds up into even pleats. When you lower it, the fabric falls flat over the window.

For an inside mount, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the frame, and use the smallest number. Measure the height on the left, center and right, and use the largest. Full steps are in our measuring guide.

No. Roman shades are a timeless choice. Natural linens, textured weaves and bold prints keep them current in modern, coastal and traditional homes.

Vacuum gently with a brush attachment every few weeks. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and mild soap. For a deeper clean, have the shade professionally dry-cleaned.

Yes. Add a blackout lining to block most outside light. For the darkest result, choose an outside mount so the shade overlaps the window frame.
